Since it was first built in wood by the Romans around AD 50, the bridge has undergone several major reconstructions.

The present bridge, inaugurated in 1973, is a pre-stressed concrete structure designed by architect Harold King. It is 269 meters long and 32 meters wide, with a clearance height of 8.9 meters above the Thames. This modern bridge continues to play an essential role in London's road and pedestrian traffic.
